A pole on the ground is simple. A pole raised only a few inches changes the question a horse must answer: Where are my feet, how much do I need to lift, and can I travel through this exercise with balance? A riser should not wobble, roll, split, or collapse under ordinary use. Horses notice inconsistency quickly. If the horse consistently chips, stretches, rushes, or lands disorganized, revisit the exercise rather than assuming the horse needs to try harder.
A practical session often includes only a few passes. Pole work is physically and mentally demanding when it is done well. Quality repetitions with breaks are more productive than drilling a horse until fatigue changes its form.

For a home rider, portability and storage may be the deciding factors. For a lesson program or training facility, durability, consistency, and speed of setup usually carry more weight. In either case, inspect the design closely.
Look for a broad, stable base; defined pole channels; stackable height options; weather-resistant material; and a design that can handle repeated handling. Consider whether the system nests or stacks neatly, whether it is easy to carry around the arena, and whether replacement pieces will match the original setup over time.
It is also worth considering the visual standard the equipment sets.
